Mini Canada: Brand History & Summary
Mini Canada has 30 retailers in the country, most of these integrated together with a BMW dealer. During 2020, even with the COVID19 pandemic impact, a total of 6,951 units were sold during the whole year.
Mini Canada maintains its own identity even though it operates under the umbrella of BMW Group Canada. BMW Canada was established in 1986. Currently, it has headquarters in Richmond Hil, Ontario and has 30 retailers across Canada dedicated to the Mini brand of vehicles, most of these shared with BMW.
In 1957, Sir Leonard Lord of the Morris company asked his best engineer Alec Issigonis to design a fuel-efficient and small car. Issigonis, along with his team, designed the Mini that would get released in 1959. In 1961, at the request of British racing legend John Cooper, the Classic Mini Cooper 997 was created. By 1977, 4 million units of the Classic Mini would be sold worldwide later in the 1980s. In the 1990s, BMW bought Rover Group which owned the rights to the Mini design. In 2000, BMW relaunched Mini as a separate brand.
