Maserati Canada: Brand History & Summary
Maserati Canada has eight dealerships across the country. During 2020, even with the COVID19 pandemic impact, Maserati Canada sold 442 units, dropping from 566 in 2019.
Maserati used to handle sales from the company’s US office, and the cars were priced in US dollars. However, the Italian automaker established Maserati Canada Inc. in 2015. Now cars are imported directly from Italy and the prices are defined in Canadian Dollars keeping prices fewer variables and more affordable for Canadian buyers. Maserati Canada Inc has its headquarter in Mississauga.
In 1914, the four Maserati brothers, Alfieri, Ettore, Ernesto and Bindo, started the Officine Alfieri Maserati in Bologna, Italy. Alfieri was the leading man in the operation. In 1920, he began working on the first original car. Due to financial problems, it took a few years to get the operations running, but in 1926, the first Maserati car "Tipo 26" was born. Maserati cars started to garner attention in the racing circuits. However, by 1940, Alfieri was dead and the other brothers decided to sell their shares to the Adolfo Orsi family. Under Orsi ownership, the 3500 GT, 5000 GT and Ghibli Coupe were created. In 1968, the French car manufacturer Citroën took over the ownership. After Citroën went bankrupt, the control was passed to Alejandro De Tomaso. In 1993, Alejandro sold his stakes to FIAT. Then FIAT sold Maserati to its rival Ferrari who turned it into Ferrari’s luxury division. In 2005, Maserati split from Ferrari and partnered with Alfa Romeo under FIAT. Today Maserati models include Ghibli, Quattroporte, GranTurismo and recently Levante SUV.
