The American electric automaker has started releasing a quarterly report regarding the safety of their vehicles. Essentially, they are releasing a small update that compares the average safety of their cars compared to the ones issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Autopilot "Thing"
There is a key aspect here to notice: they split the stats between "driving with Autopilot" and without it. Remember that Autopilot is mainly used in highways and at a higher speed rate than small streets. It means that the average mileage you do on a trip is about 70% - 90% on the highway or high-speed avenues/roads. Still, the numbers are pretty nice to understand the comparison between the assisted and "human" driving factor.
Q1 2019
- 1 accident for every 2,910,000 miles driven with Autopilot Engaged.
- 1 accident for every 1,580,000 miles driven without Autopilot.

- One accident for every 2,870,000 miles driven with Autopilot Engaged.
- One accident for every 1,760,000 miles driven without Autopilot.
