Anyone who’s spent some time in Vancouver during the winter knows to dress for all different types of weather when leaving the house — a sunny afternoon can be followed by showers or even a short bout of hail. Likewise, drivers should also be prepared to deal with various conditions during the colder months. Here’s how.
Mount winter tires
Even though there may be no snow on the ground, all-season and summer tires lose their ability to function properly at temperatures below 7 C, which causes the rubber compound in such tires to harden and lose grip. Winter tires, on the other hand, are specially formulated to stay malleable even in sub-zero conditions. The trade-off is less tread life, so remember to swap them back out in the spring.
Inspect wipers
The city is nicknamed “Raincouver” for a reason. A lot of the wet stuff falls between December and April, and it’s important to have wipers that can actually clear the windshield. Lift up the blades to look for any cracking or chunks missing, and perform a test wipe: water or washer fluid should be cleared cleanly and streak-free. Otherwise, visit the local auto parts store for a replacement set.
Stay up-to-date with maintenance
A vehicle breaking down is never pleasant, and doubly so when it’s foul out. Ensure this doesn’t happen by keeping on top of maintenance. Change the oil, Top up other engine bay fluids radiator, transmission, power steering, etc.), check the life of brake pads, and inflate the tires to the recommended pressure indicated on the driver’s side door jamb sticker.
Pack an emergency kit
If car trouble does arise, don’t be left stranded without emergency supplies. A kit can be assembled easily and at low cost by gathering together jumper cables, a first-aid kit, blanket, flashlight, extra batteries, basic tool set, can of tire inflator, triangle reflectors, and an ice scraper brush. Don’t forget bottled water and a box of energy bars for sustenance.
Install rubber floor mats
While having proper weather-resistant mats will definitely keep the vehicle interior cleaner, it will also prevent feet from slipping and sliding after dragging in mud and ice from trekking across the parking lot. Get model-specific ones that include an anchor for the driver’s side mat to prevent unwanted movement.
